The Gunman: Ray Winstone Slams ‘Wet’ UK Politicians

Despite starring in this weekend’s surprisingly political action thriller ‘The Gunman’, Ray Winstone admits he’s not sure who he’ll vote for in the upcoming general election.

“They’re all a bit wet aren’t they?” Winstone told Yahoo Movies.

“I’d like a man to stand up and just be a little bit honest. I think they need to be accountable for the promises they make. They’re there to represent us and I don’t feel they do.”

Sean Penn’s choice to play a gun-toting, fast car driving, beautiful woman seducing hero at this stage in his career may come as a surprise to those of us who recognise the Oscar winner as much for his strong political conscience as his acting prowess.

But The Gunman isn’t your average shoot-em up action thriller movie.

Set against the volatile backdrop of The Congo, Penn’s debut makes a pointed statement about the involvement of Western corporations in the developing world and it’s a message that hasn’t been lost on his co-stars.

“I don’t know if it’s political as much as it’s trying to tell a true story,” Mark Rylance told Yahoo Movies.

“I think Sean is interested in telling true stories.”

Ray Winstone, who plays Sean’s friend and mentor Stan in the high-octane thriller, has nothing but admiration for his co-star’s strong moral compass when it comes to movie making.

“Unlike Sean, I’m like everyone else who moans about it but doesn’t do anything about it,” admits Winstone.

“But he does. He gets out there and says his piece and makes films about it.”

'The Gunman' is in cinemas from Friday, 20 March. Watch a clip below.
