The Hobbit: Check Out Air New Zealand's Epic Middle Earth In-Flight Safety Video

“There are emergency exits here, here and here… and make sure your precious, magical rings forged in the fires of Mount Doom are secured in the overhead lockers.”

OK, we’ve made that one up.

But the new safety video for Air New Zealand, dubbed ‘The Most Epic Safety Video Ever Made’ and set to be rolled out across the airline’s whole fleet from today, does cover all the usual bases, just with a few dazzlingly ace cameos thrown in.

Elijah Wood pitches up in the first 30 seconds to freak out two flapping ‘Lord of the Rings’ geeks as they board their flight from Wellington airport.

After snapping the huge Golum in the departure lounge, they rush for their seats only to find they’re sitting opposite flipping Mr Frodo himself.

Then after asking for the ‘rabble rousing’ to cease, a distinctly elven-looking member of the cabin crew gets to the real business of in-flight safety.

Dean O’Gorman, aka the dwarf Fíli, instructs passengers how to fasten their seatbelts, while Sylvester McCoy (that’s Radagast to the fans) explains the use of the oxygen masks and how to brace for an emergency landing if you’re sitting in the posh seats.

Then it’s the turn of director Peter Jackson to request that all electronic devices are stowed (Sir Richard Taylor, co-founder of Jackson’s Weta studio turns up too).

Directed by Taika Waititi – who takes on the role of a grey wizard who rings a bell somewhere – it’s most certainly a demonstration that’s a bit harder to ignore while looking through the duty free catalogue.
