There’s Something About Mary Musical On The Way?

With jokes about bodily fluids and genitalia getting caught in zips, ‘There’s Something About Mary’ may not share a great deal in common with the classic musicals of Broadway past.

But according to writer/director Bobby Farrelly, the 1998 Ben Stiller/Cameron Diaz comedy could be heading to the stage, as he and his brother Peter are working on adapting it for the theatre.

“It really lends itself to some funny songs,” says Farrelly, pictured below with his sibling, whose ‘Dumb and Dumber To’ came out last year and is heading to DVD on 20 April. “It has a lot of potential in a different medium.”

While the brothers aren't known for sequels, the success of 'Dumb and Dumber To' demonstrates that it can be worth returning to characters. But don't expect a retread of the original movie. When it comes to 'Mary' on Broadway, Farrelly compares it to how ‘Wicked’ retold ‘The Wizard Of Oz’ and says we won’t be seeing the exact same narrative as the film.

“It’s the same story, but from someone else’s perspective,” he reveals. “We have to reimagine, otherwise the audience is too far ahead of you, they know everything about it.”

So that’ll be Magda: The Musical, then.

‘There’s Something About Mary’ was a smash hit when it was released 17 years ago, redefining comedy with its gross-out humour and turning Stiller and Diaz into massive stars.

And you may remember that it actually featured a semi-musical narration from singer-songwriter Jonathan Richman, who pops up periodically before being accidentally shot at the end.

Over the years, the Farrellys had considered writing a sequel before deciding a musical was a better option.

Nevertheless, it’ll be interesting to see how the movie translates to the stage considering it’s reliant on several sight gags, the most infamous of which is the naughty hair gel moment.

“We thought it was funny as we were making it, but we weren’t 100% sure,” says Bobby. “And Cameron Diaz came to us and said, ‘guys, I’m getting a little concerned – what if this doesn’t work? I don’t want people to look at me like there’s that girl that did that gross thing.’ We said to her, ‘we think it’s funny. We’ll let you watch it with a crowd. If they go oo, we’ll cut the thing right out of the movie. But if they laugh like we think they will, it stays.’ It was such a big laugh that it even surprised us.”

As for Harry and Lloyd, does he think they could have more of a future? "With Harry and Lloyd it feels like these are two guys that can go on various adventures," he reveals. "Actually, I would consider doing another one a few years down the road from now."

‘Dumb and Dumber To’ is available on Blu-ray and DVD from 20 April.
