A hiker said they were left "flabbergasted" when they encountered Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise during their walk in the Lake District.

Cruise was spotted in the area earlier this month, filming a parachute stunt for the upcoming blockbuster Mission: Impossible 7, which has been shooting in the UK for much of this year.

The Lake District was the latest British locale to play host to an impressive spectacle, which will appear in Christopher McQuarrie's movie when it makes its way to cinemas next year.

Andras Katica told The Sun he was hiking with a friend when he noticed the A-lister.

He said: “I certainly wasn’t expecting to bump into Tom Cruise during my hike. When I realised who it was I was obviously totally flabbergasted.

“But he was really friendly and offered to have his picture taken. He looked like he was having a great time but was also clearly involved in some serious work for the filming.

“By the time he parachuted away there was a little crowd gathered, but Tom didn’t show any sign of nerves. He obviously loves the thrill of being involved in his own stunts.”

Cruise has been popping up all over the UK in recent months, including paying a visit to a Birmingham curry restaurant and shooting a train crash sequence in Derbyshire.

He even landed his helicopter in a family's Warwickshire garden and asked showbiz pal James Corden whether he could touch down in his yard.

It was confirmed this month that filming has finally wrapped on Mission: Impossible 7 — 19 months after production was scheduled to begin, prior to numerous COVID-19 delays.

The film will reunite Cruise with co-stars including Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby and Ving Rhames, with Hayley Atwell among the new additions to the cast.

Cruise, McQuarrie and the team have worked hard to complete filming on the mammoth production during the coronavirus pandemic, with a viral audio recording showcasing Cruise yelling at crew members who were not abiding by distancing rules.

Mission: Impossible 7 is due to hit UK cinemas in September 2022, with the eighth movie set to follow less than a year later in July 2023.
