Tom Hardy Explains Why He Quit Suicide Squad

In the wake of our first official look at the cast of Warner Bros/DC’s upcoming super-villain team up movie ‘Suicide Squad,’ one of the original cast members Tom Hardy has at last spoken publicly about his decision to leave the film.

The acclaimed British actor’s withdrawal from writer-director David Ayer’s film prompted the expected slew of rumours, most notable of which was murmurs of discontent relating to the script.

However, Hardy insists the answer is far simpler - and expresses regret over the move.

Hardy tells Collider, “Warner Bros. is my home studio and I love them so I was really bummed out. I wanted to work on that and I know the script is really f***ing alley and I also know what’s gonna happen with The Joker and Harley Quinn in that; I won’t give away too much…

“And that whole territory is something that I would certainly—I mean, everybody loves The Joker. Everybody loves The Joker. Will Smith is a dope guy, but everybody loves The Joker and that’s gonna, I think, be a very important film for fans.”

Hardy’s explanation for quitting ‘Suicide Squad’ falls in line with the official reason given at the time: scheduling conflicts on his other most recent film ‘The Revenant,’ with Leonardo DiCaprio and ‘Birdman’ director Alejandro G. Inarritu

“There’s a very practical element as to why I’ve missed out on that foray, which is because Alejandro has overshot by three months in Calgary, so we’ve got to go back out to Patagonia or Alaska to continue shooting The Revenant which has turned into a much bigger beast than we thought, but that also looks exceptional.

“Literally we wrapped in Calgary for now until we go back in July. It would have smashed the two, I would’ve had a beard. It was just not gonna happen so I got ass-slammed technically out of Suicide Squad, gutted, so I had to hand it over to Joel Kinnaman, who will do an amazing job. It’s just I got bumped out, and that’s cool that’s the way it is.”

Kinnaman (above, with Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Will Smith as Deadshot) took over as Rick Flagg after Jake Gyllenhaal was reportedly courted for the part.

While Hardy will almost certainly have signed non-disclosure agreements forbidding him from revealing any grievances he might have had to do with ‘Suicide Squad,’ he would surely be under no obligation to speak as enthusiastically about the film as he does here.

This might go some way to allaying the fears of some fans - which may come in handy, given fan sentiment toward the film has taken a bit of a hit of late since the mixed-to-negative reactions to the reveal of first Jared Leto’s Joker, then the main cast assembled in costume and character.

Currently in production, ‘Suicide Squad’ hits screens in 2016. Meanwhile, Hardy will next be seen in an other eagerly anticipated Warner Bros movie, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ on  14 May.
