Tom Hardy Wants To Play Marvel’s Punisher

After exiting DC’s ‘Suicide Squad’ it looks as though Tom Hardy is still keen on landing a comic book movie… and he’d love to take the role of The Punisher.

During an interview with Collider, the 37-year-old ‘Mad Max’ star admitted that he wants to become Frank Castle on the big screen. And I get the feeling Marvel fans might just love it.

“I want The Punisher,” he said. “I want The Punisher, or Splinter Cell, I want something… I don’t know what I want… I’m not big enough to be The Punisher, I’m 5’9” [Laughs]. Frank Castle, I would love it. Is that him, isn’t it?”

Of course, The Punisher was last seen on the big screen in the 2008 Marvel movie, ‘Punisher: War Zone’ and was played by Ray Stevenson. Although the version many fans consider to be the best so far was Thomas Jane’s 2004 ‘The Punisher’.

But could Tom Hardy manage to top that?

The ‘Mad Max’ star recently disappointed comic book fans when he dropped out of DC’s upcoming ‘Suicide Squad’ movie. Originally, he was supposed to star as Rick Flagg Jr – one of the more grounded members of the squad. But it seems that just wasn’t meant to be.

In a recent interview, he revealed that he was forced to leave the production due to other schedule commitments. But that hasn’t stopped him from wanting to star in his own comic book movie.

And I can’t help thinking he’d make a brilliant Frank Castle.

Known for his roles in ‘Bronson’ and ‘Locke’, Tom Hardy certainly has the on screen intensity to bring the emotional struggle of Frank Castle to life. And with his experience taking on action roles in the likes of ‘Mad Max’ and ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ he’s certainly no stranger to some on-screen fighting.

And let’s face it – he certainly has the Frank Castle look.

But will he get the chance to appear as The Punisher? For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but so far, we’ve heard very little in the way of Punisher film or TV appearances.

But perhaps Marvel will change its mind.

‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ heads to cinemas on 14 May 2015.
