Tom Holland Screen Tested With Chris Evans And Robert Downey, Jr. To Secure Spider-Man

Further details regarding the casting process for Tom Holland as he sought to secure the role of Spider-Man in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe have come out now that the English actor has been confirmed as Peter Parker.

And according to The Hollywood Reporter, Holland had to screen-test with none-other than Robert Downey, Jr. and Chris Evans in order to convince Sony and Marvel’s head honchos that he was right for the part.

It’s been reported that Marvel and Sony saw over 1,500 actors, including a hoard of unknown actors as well as several recognisable thespians, for the part. In late May this was then reduced to six – believed to be Holland, Asa Butterfield, Judah Lewis, Matthew Lintz, Charlie Plummer, and Charlie Rowe.

These actors were flown to Atlanta and then screen-tested with Iron Man himself, Robert Downey, Jr., as the producers looked to spot chemistry between the potential actors and the prominent Avenger. Downey, Jr. was selected because it’s thought that Iron-Man shares several scenes with Spider-Man in ‘Civil War’.

After the candidates were whittled down to just Charlie Rowe and Holland, the two then screen-tested with Chris Evans as Captain America and Downey again.

It’s thought that Holland became the obvious choice after his performances in the second screen tests, while some insiders have revealed that Holland was only informed on Monday about the latest advancement to his career.

Ahead of his 2017 solo adventure, Holland is widely expected to make his Spider-Man debut in next summer’s ‘Captain America: Civil War’. And even though this is still unconfirmed, the fact that he tried out with Downey, Jr. and Evans suggests that it’s a formality at this point.
