According to Variety, Walt Disney Co. chief Bob Iger made the announcement while talking to Wall Street analysts.

Disney subsequently released a statement confirming the news, adding that the story was dreamt up by Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter and Lee Unkrich.

“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us,” said Lasseter. “We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”

Writing team Rashida Jones and Will McCormack join the project alongside producer Galyn Susman.

The news that there will be a ‘Toy Story 4’ is enough to warm even the coldest of hearts.

The franchise has been hugely successful for both Disney and Pixar. ‘Toy Story 3’ was released in 2010 and went on to earn close to $1.1 billion around the world while 1995’s ‘Toy Story’ and 1999’s ‘Toy Story 2’ took in $740 million between them too.

However there was a feeling of finality to ‘Toy Story 3’. Not only did Woody and Buzz’s owner, Andy, give the toys away to Bonnie but it perfectly rounded off the saga. Even the recent Toy Story TV short, ‘Toy Story Of Terror’, as well as its recent Toy Story Toons, ‘Hawaiian Vacation’, ‘Small Fry’, and ‘Partysaurus Rex’, seemed to suggest that the franchise would proceed in this form.

So is there actually any need to make ‘Toy Story 4’? Of course there is. Not only is it hugely popular but it has been a critical darling too.

The ‘Toy Story 4’ is currently in the works can only be met with enthusiasm. June 2017 can’t come soon enough.
