Toy Story 4 Will Not Continue The Narrative of Toy Story 3

With last year’s announcement that Pixar are to make another ‘Toy Story’ film, its President, Jim Morris, has offered some further detail in relation to the plot of ‘Toy Story 4’.

John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, and Lee Unkrich have collaborated on the fourth instalment’s story, with ‘Celeste and Jesse Forever’ duo Rashida Jones and Will McCormack on scriptwriting duties.

Speaking to Disney Latino, and after Pixar Times’ attempt to translate, Morris explained that the team at Pixar are “putting together a very nice story,” and went on to say it’s “not a continuation of the end of the story of ‘Toy Story 3.”

He went on to reaffirm it’ll be a love story, specifically a romantic comedy, and what the vibe of the film will be. He claims it won’t focus on the “interaction between the characters and children,” implying it will be very toy-centric (as you can probably expect) and may do away with humans altogether, although we are merely speculating at this point.

It’s somewhat of a surprise to hear that ‘Toy Story 4’ will enter rom-com territory, but let’s not forget that the first three had plenty of romantic elements between various toy characters. That said, with the Pixar elite overseeing it, there’s no doubt it’ll also bring plenty of wit and laughter as is the Pixar way.

"I think this movie is not part of [the] trilogy. It is a separate story, which in turn do not know if will be continued," which is an interesting spin (and if you'll excuse the articulation of the translation). So, is this a standalone movie? A spin-off, perhaps? We’re not quite sure, but it’ll likely fit into the context of its predecessors and won’t feel too different in tone.  

And to the joy of fans, John Lasseter will be directing the next film in the series, yet many sceptics out there believe ‘Toy Story 3’ ended it all rather perfectly — a statement Pixar will surely agree with — hence this idea of a “separate story” of sorts.
