Tron 3 Reportedly Gets A Title

Although the upcoming ‘Tron’ sequel remains a rumour for the time being, it seems we now have a potential title – ‘Tron: Ascension’.

It’s no secret that ‘Tron 3’ is rumoured to be in development… even though Disney is yet to confirm its existence. But with rumours that Joseph Kosinski and Garrett Hedlund may return, it looks as though yet-another ‘Tron’ sequel could be in the works.

And the latest rumour gives it a name…

According to Production Weekly, the reportedly upcoming ‘Tron’ sequel will be filming later this year… and they refer to it by the name, ‘Tron: Ascension’.

Of course, this is the first we’ve heard resembling an ‘official’ title… and while nothing has been confirmed by Disney as yet, it certainly sounds plausible.

According to recent reports, Garrett Hedlund will return as Sam Flynn – son of Jeff Bridges’ character, Kevin Flynn from the original 1982 classic. But will anyone else be joining them? Although ‘Tron: Legacy’ featured the return of Bruce Boxleitner, we’re yet to find out if he or Jeff Bridges will be back for ‘Tron 3’… and Olivia Wilde is equally unconfirmed.

But does this new title tell us anything?

After ‘Tron Legacy’, I can’t help thinking that ‘Ascension’ is a rather apt sub-title. After all, with Quorra managing to transcend the boundaries of the computer system and escape to the real world, it looks as though ENCOM’s new tech is really pushing the boundaries.

Of course, the name ‘Tron: Ascension’ implies some sort of continuation of Quorra’s story… unless there are other programs who have made it out. But will Olivia Wilde return for the sequel?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but back in 2013, director Joseph Kosinski revealed some ideas he had for the third film. And it could well tie everything together.

“The fundamental idea of the movie is something I’m very excited about,” he said. “It delivers on the ideas that we set up in Legacy, especially at the end in the last five minutes.”

But will everyone be on board for ‘Tron: Ascension’? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
