Update: Alien 5 Will NOT Dismiss Alien Sequels

After last week’s massive news that Neill Blomkamp — the director set to get behind the camera of the anticipated ‘Alien 5’ — will ignore ‘Alien 3’ and ‘Alien: Resurrection’, it seems now that’s not his intention after all.

While Blomkamp’s comments in a Sky Movies interview implied he wanted to do away with ‘Alien 3’ and ‘Alien: Resurrection’ and make his vision something that’d follow on from ‘Aliens’, it seemed clear-cut what he was saying.

“I want this film to feel like it is literally the genetic sibling of ‘Aliens’,” the ‘District 9’ helmer said. And with this the internet went into meltdown. Some applauded his decision to ignore the latter sequels, whereas others slammed the choice.

However, in an interview with French channel AlloCiné, it strongly suggests otherwise. Blomkamp expresses; “My favourites are the first two movies, so I wanna make a film that’s connected to ‘Alien’ and ‘Aliens’ — that’s my goal. I’m not trying to undo ‘Alien 3’ or ‘Alien: Resurrection’; I just want it to be connected to Alien 1 and 2.”

These comments clarify Blomkamp’s intentions a little better, but we’re still left with the question of whether ‘Alien 5’ will actually acknowledge or ignore the latter sequels. Obviously with no script in place, it’s impossible to know what the angle will be.

Weaver had this to say, even though she is yet to officially sign up to the project: “I always wanted to complete the story, and it wasn’t until Neill and I started talking and I thought ‘this is why we’ve waited, however many years it’s been’, and I’m very excited.”

The star of the iconic ‘Alien’ and its three sequels, Weaver reveals there is further concept art in existence than what Blomkamp recently posted on Instagram. “There are many more that he hasn’t shown, which are secret.”

The actress pretty much confirms that she’s involved as Ellen Ripley and indeed in the creative process, whereby things are moving along nicely. “We’re beginning to flesh out, and I’m afraid the public will have to wait… But it’ll be very organic and I’m looking forward to being with her [Ripley] again.”

These comments, both from Blomkamp and Weaver, are very interesting in the development and implication over what exactly ‘Alien 5’ (as it’s being dubbed) will have in store, so for now we shall keep our ear to the ground.
