Viola Davis Confirms Suicide Squad Talks

After rumours that Viola Davis would join the upcoming ‘Suicide Squad’, it looks as though she’s still working on her Amanda Waller.

It’s one of DC’s most off-the-wall superhero movies to head to the big screen in the coming years… but with Jared Leto, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie and Will Smith on board, it looks as though the ‘Suicide Squad’ are about to become a household name.

But who will take charge of the erratic squad of super villains? Viola Davis seemingly confirms rumours that she will star as Amanda Waller.

During an interview with Nerd Report, the 49-year-old ‘Black Hat’ actress seemingly confirmed her involvement in ‘Suicide Squad’.

“Not yet,” she said when asked if she’s begun reading the comic books. “I have not started reading them yet. I’ve read up about her but I’m working out my schedule for ‘Suicide Squad’.”

Of course, the face that she’s still working out her schedule sounds as though it isn’t quite a done deal. But her comments on the role of Amanda Waller make it seem as though it’s only a matter of time.

“I’m fascinated by her,” she said. “I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.”

Obviously, fans of the comic books will know all about Amanda Waller’s rather murky backstory. A congressional aide who was placed in charge of the Suicide Squad, Amanda managed to take control of the team despite their mutual dislike.

In the comic books, there was plenty of friction between Amanda and various members – most notably, Captain Boomerang. And various team members were often at odds with her due to her inability to compromise.

Whether that particular character trait makes it to the big screen remains a mystery. But one thing’s for certain – with Viola Davis in the role, ‘Suicide Squad’ will be led by a very strong female indeed.

‘Suicide Squad’ heads to cinemas on 5 August 2016.
