Yahoo Movies Where the cast of Spy Kids are now
Spy Kids turns 20 years old this year (and now you feel old), but that's not the only reason Robert Rodriguez's family classic is in the news again.
Fresh off the success of We Can Be Heroes, Rodriguez is now developing a reboot of the franchise and will write and direct a new movie, set to revolve around the activities of a multicultural family.
While it's unlikely that the original crop of Spy Kids will return for the next outing, it got us thinking about what the cast of the first movie are up to now and since the franchise ended with 2011's Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.
(We've left off George Clooney as he's just a cameo and we reckon you know he's still knocking around acting-wise.)
Alexa Vega – Carmen Cortez
Now known as Alexa PenaVega after marrying Carlos Pena Jr in 2014, PenaVega has mostly appeared in Hallmark movies in recent years, such as 2019's Picture Perfect Mysteries: Newlywed and Dead alongside her husband.
She also voices a role in Nickelodeon's The Casagrandes alongside Melissa Joan Hart and Ken Jeong, which is currently airing its second season and has been renewed for a third.
Daryl Sabara – Juni Cortez
Nowadays, Daryl Sabara is most known for his role as Heatblast in Ben 10, a role he also played in 2020's Ben 10 Versus The Universe: The Movie. His last live-action movie role was in 2014 comedy-horror Teen Lust.
He's married to Meghan Trainor and she revealed in October 2020 that the couple were expecting their first child together.
Antonio Banderas – Gregorio Cortez
You probably don't need us to tell you that Antonio Banderas has been keeping busy since Spy Kids and has various projects coming up, but we will anyway.
Banderas was most recently seen in 2020's notorious flop Dolittle and will be hoping for more success with upcoming movies The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (August 20, 2021) and the long-awaited Uncharted movie (February 11, 2022).
Carla Gugino – Ingrid Cortez
Like her co-star Banderas, you'll know what Carla Gugino has been involved in recently with her most notable roles coming in The Haunting of Hill House (Olivia Crain) and The Haunting of Bly Manor (storyteller) on Netflix.
Gugino will next be seen alongside the likes of Karen Gillan and Lena Headey in Gunpowder Milkshake, an action movie about three generations of female assassins who fight to stop a cycle of violence.
Alan Cumming – Fegan Floop
Since his Spy Kids and X-Men days, Alan Cumming has largely stayed away from blockbusters, but has had major roles in notable TV shows such as The Good Wife and Instinct.
He was most recently seen in the short-lived TV show Briarpatch and has upcoming movie roles in the likes of Run (not to be confused with the Sarah Paulson thriller) and Bright in a Hollow Sky.
Teri Hatcher – Ms Gradenko
Spy Kids actually marked one of Teri Hatcher's last major live-action movie roles as her other notable movies since have been voice roles in the likes of Coraline and Planes.
Hatcher was, of course, in all eight seasons of Desperate Housewives and had a recurring role in Supergirl, but otherwise, she's mostly been seen on cooking reality shows (such as Bake Off) and her own YouTube channel Hatching Change which promotes positivity.
Cheech Marin – Felix Gumm
Though a new Cheech & Chong movie rumoured in 2014 never came to be, Cheech Marin has been the subject of his own documentary in 2019 that followed his lifelong advocacy for Chicano art.
He's also had voice roles in Pixar's Cars series and Coco, while his most recent live-action role was in last year's The War with Grandpa, alongside Robert De Niro and Uma Thurman.
Danny Trejo – Isador 'Machete' Cortez
The prolific Danny Trejo starred in no fewer than seven movies in 2020, including the latest SpongeBob movie, and for Trejo, that actually counted as a slow year, even if you take into account his TV show appearances in Muppets Now, Dynasty and more.
It'd probably be quicker to say what Trejo hasn't been up to in the two decades since Spy Kids, but we have to mention he even has his own restaurants in Los Angeles, including Trejo's Coffee & Donuts.
Robert Patrick – Mr Lisp
Odds are that you've probably seen Robert Patrick in some sort of authority figure role in recent years, such as in last year's Honest Thief or 2019's The Laundromat, not to mention his leading role in TV show Scorpion.
Patrick has an exciting year ahead as he joins The Walking Dead in its extended tenth season and he will also be seen in The Suicide Squad spin-off show Peacemaker.
Tony Shalhoub – Alexander Minion
While his biggest movie roles recently were in the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies voicing Splinter, Tony Shalhoub has had ongoing roles in The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and Central Park since Monk ended its eight-season run in 2009.
Next up for Shalhoub will be season four of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel and a role in comedy sci-fi movie Linoleum alongside Better Call Saul's Rhea Seehorn.
Mike Judge – Donnagon Giggles
Although he has had acting roles since Spy Kids, Beavis and Butt-Head creator Mike Judge has mostly been creating and directing TV shows in recent years.
After King of the Hill finished in 2010, Judge co-created Silicon Valley which ran for six seasons and ended in 2019, while he'll next be seen in comedy-drama Some of Our Stallions which is also executive produced.
