Who in the World? Brit Star Nearly Unrecognizable for New Role

Is it a cosplay Cruella De Ville? Nope. An extra from a long-lost episode The Sopranos? Fuhgeddaboutit. It’s none other than Academy Award winning actress and screenwriter Emma Thompson.

The good news is, she’s dressed like that for a reason. The always elegant Thompson — perhaps best known for her work in period pieces like Sense and Sensibility, Howard’s End, and Remains of the Day — is making a movie with nary a butler or bonnet in sight.

The Legend of Barney Thomson stars Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting) in the titular role as a hapless Glasgow barber who stumbles into the world of serial killing. The film is based on a series of books by Douglas Lindsey. Thompson plays Carlyle’s mother despite being just two years older in real life.

The Herald Scotland reports that Thompson’s heavy makeup takes three hours each day. Producer Rich Cowan told the paper, “When Emma read the script she said she wanted to do it straight away. She’s nailing it at the moment.” No word on when the film will hit theaters, but just in case you need a reminder of what Thompson looks like in her normal movie-star life, here’s this below:
