Who Will Be The Female Superhero Star Of The Spider-Man Spin-Off Movie?

With news that Sony is seriously plotting a Spider-Man spin-off movie with a female superhero at the helm, it’s set comic book fans alight with speculation.

The movie is said be planned for 2017, but doubtless the identity of the Marvel comics heroine is currently in discussion at the studio.

Deadline reports that Lisa Joy, the ‘Burn Notice’ writer who is currently penning J.J. Abrams’ ‘Westworld’ TV series, is on script duties.

And with the next Spider-Man movie, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3’, pushed back to 2018, it’s likely that this mysterious female superhero will get the jump on Peter Parker.

But who will it be? Here are some of the possibilities currently being mooted…

Spider-Woman/Spider-Girl

Though perhaps an obvious choice, one of these two might be a option. Jessica Drew was the original Spider-Woman, appearing first in 1977. She had her own animated series in 1979 too. Later, the alter-ego was taken over by Julia Carpenter, who became one of the Avengers for a time. Spider-Girl, meanwhile, was the nom-de-plume of May ‘Mayday’ Parker’, the teenage daughter of Spidey himself, Peter Parker, and Mary Jane Watson. This might clash a bit with the timeline of the Spider-Man movies a bit though.

Firestar

Angel Jones’ superhero alias Firestar could be a goer, however. She was one of Spider-Man’s ‘Amazing Friends’ in the animated series from the 80s, and was also one of the X-Men and one of the Avengers for a time too. Her impressive talent was to be able to generate and manipulate microwave radiation. So heating up soups is a breeze.

Silver Sable

Not to be confused with Silver Surfer, Sable – aka Silver Sablinova – is a mercenary and hunter of war criminals, first appearing in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ comics in 1985. Cold and emotionless, she’s often clashed with other superheroes through her business dealings. But perhaps the anti-hero isn’t the angle they’ll go for.

Black Cat

The alter ego of Felicia Hardy, the daughter of a renowned cat burglar, the glamorous – and dangerous - Black Cat has been around the Spider-Man comics world since 1979. She could be the most likely candidate for a spin-off too – as she’s already been introduced in the latest movies. Played by Felicity Jones, she’s Harry Osborn’s assistant at OsCorp in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’. With a rich history in Marvel Comics, the smart money could be on her.
