Will Captain Marvel Appear In Avengers: Age Of Ultron?

Superheroine Captain Marvel may be set for a surprise introduction in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron,' a report has claimed.

While this title has been held by a number of characters over the decades (both male and female), the current Captain Marvel is Carol Danvers, a US Air Force officer who was initially known as Ms Marvel after being imbued with alien superpowers (flight, super-speed and strength, all the classics) - and it’s her name that tends to come up first whenever the subject of female Marvel characters who deserve their own movie is broached.

While a ‘Captain Marvel’/’Ms Marvel’ film remains unconfirmed, the smart money is on this being the first long-promised female-led Marvel Studios production, most likely taking up one of the as-yet unaccounted for slots on Marvel’s release schedule from 2016 onwards.

Now, there are suggestions that Warners/DC’s ‘Wonder Woman’ solo movie announcement (plus Sony’s reported female-centred ‘Spider-Man’ spin-off) may have forced Marvel’s hand.

Bleeding Cool report that the ‘Captain Marvel’ comic book, which had been scheduled for cancellation due to poor sales, has been saved from the chopping block.

According to their sources, this may be because Marvel’s publishing wing “seem to be under the impression that, yes, Captain Marvel as Carol Danvers will be appearing in ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron,’ which might boost the sales of the comic book.”

This is certainly not the first time we’ve heard tell that Captain Marvel might appear in ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron.’ Rumours to this effect first surfaced well over a year ago, with widespread reports that actress Katee Sackhoff had met with Marvel about the role.

However, back in August Badass Digest put the brakes on these rumours. While confirming that a Captain Marvel cameo was indeed written into the script, they claimed Marvel Studios had gotten “cold feet” over the idea, “because they’re not certain they want to introduce her in this way.”

It’s not hard to see why, given the criticism Warners/DC have attracted from some quarters for choosing to introduce Wonder Woman as a supporting character in ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.’

Of course, it’s not inconceivable that Marvel may have had a change of heart since - and growing demand for greater female representation in their movies may well be a factor in this.

As Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently confirmed that the climax of ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ will see the line-up of the super-team change, could Captain Marvel be a surprise addition?

Having been introduced as Ms Marvel in 1968, Carol Danvers was rechristened Captain Marvel in the comics in 2012.

Year back there had been legal issues surrounding the use of this name due to the pre-existing Fawcett Comics creation Captain Marvel. This character is now a DC property, renamed ‘Shazam’ - itself lined up for a 2019 Warners/DC movie starring Dwayne Johnson (which James Wan is rumoured to be in line to direct).

The ‘Ms Marvel’ mantle has subsequently been passed to the character Kamala Khan, the first Muslim character to take the title role in a comic book.
