William Shatner has hit back at critics who slated him for missing the funeral of his friend and ’Star Trek’ co-star Leonard Nimoy.

Shatner instead honoured a previously confirmed charity engagement in Florida for the Red Cross.

But in a case of being damned if he did, and damned if he didn’t, Twitter users – and the New York Daily News - berated him for the choice.

New York radio DJ Todd Schnitt from the WOR710 station was among those who criticised Shatner, tweeting:

Angered, Shatner – who later blocked Schnitt – fired back: “So has Mr. Moneybags @toddschnitt made his donation yet to the @RedCross? A jet from FL to LA is about $30K in the name of #LeonardNimoy pls.

“WOR710 should be ashamed of having @toddschnitt as an employee.”

The New York Daily News branded him ‘Captain Jerk’ in a front-page splash, but Shatner re-tweeted the headline, adding:

Many other Twitter users came to Shatner’s defence over the cover story:

Shatner remained vocal on Twitter, however, adding that his daughters Melanie and Lisabeth would be attending the funeral in his absence.

Sidestepping the trolling, he later answered poignant questions about his great friend from less angry Twitter users:
