World War Z Sequel "Starting With A Clean Slate"

Screenwriter Steven Knight. currently working on the follow-up to ‘World War Z,’ says the sequel will clean the slate - though, frankly, your guess is as good as ours as to quite what he means by this.

Knight tells Indiewire that, when asked to write the treatment for the ‘World War Z’ sequel, “I thought, ‘why not? What fun.’ It’s not quite like the other, we’re starting with [a] clean slate. When they’ve signed off we’re on.”

Unfortunately this appears to be all Knight has to say on the matter, so quite how this sequel will relate to the first film is unclear - but given that the unexpected box office success of the original was at least in part down to the star power of leading man Brad Pitt, it seems highly unlikely his character would be written out.

Knight is hot in the film industry right now, having moved from the perhaps unlikely starting point of writing TV comedy for Jasper Carrot (including ‘Canned Carrot,’ ‘The Detectives’ and ‘All About Me’), to scripting the dark, hard-hitting dramas ‘Eastern Promises’ and ‘Dirty Pretty Things.’

Knight is also the creator of TV hit ‘Peaky Blinders,’ plus the writer-director of unconventional Jason Statham thriller ‘Hummingbird,’ and the acclaimed Tom Hardy drama ‘Locke.’

Marc Forster directed 2013’s ‘World War Z’, a very loose adaptation of Max Brooks’ cult horror novel which surprised critics by overcoming well-publicised behind-the-scenes difficulties and winding up a commercial hit ($540 million in cinemas worldwide), garnering a largely positive critical response (68% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes).

JA Bayona (‘The Orphanage,’ ‘The Impossible’) takes over as director on ‘World War Z 2,’ for which no release date has yet been announced.
