Writer Hired For Gremlins Reboot

Yes, another day, another remake-related news story. 1984 hit ‘Gremlins’ is yet another well-loved movie from years gone by that is set to return to the big screen, and now it would seem the little monsters are that bit closer to coming back.

Deadline report that screenwriter Carl Ellsworth has been brought on board to script this new take on the mischievous mogwai who spring forth from the loveable Gizmo when he gets wet, then turn into something altogether more monstrous when fed after midnight.

Ellsworth has some experience with remakes, having written 2009′s ‘The Last House on the Left’ and 2012′s ‘Red Dawn.’ He also penned earlier thrillers ‘Red Eye’ and ‘Disturbia,’ as well as the upcoming ‘Goosebumps.’

Steven Spielberg and Chris Colombus (who produced and wrote the original respectively) are producing for Warner Bros. Reportedly there has been some indication that Colombus himself may possibly direct this time around, but this is by no means certain.

Either way, original director Joe Dante - also responsible for 1989′s ‘Gremlins 2: the New Batch’ - is not expected to return.

Not unlike ‘Ghostbusters,’ which is now being rebooted after a planned second sequel was stuck in development hell for 25 years, it was for some time uncertain whether a new ‘Gremlins’ would go back to square one, or follow on directly from the existing films.

It is now expected the new film will be a total reboot - and as such, it will be interesting to see how dark they choose to go this time. While broadly family friendly, the original ‘Gremlins’ was fairly controversial for its horror elements on release, and along with ‘Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom’ - was directly responsible for the introduction of the PG-13 certificate by the MPAA in 1984.

Of course, we wouldn’t expect any new take on ‘Gremlins’ would go beyond the confines of the PG-13/12A certificate - but even so, Colombus’s original script was said to have been grislier than what ended up on screen. Will this new take honour the comedic spirit of the existing movies, or venture closer to the original vision? We look forward to finding out.
