X-Men Apocalypse May Centre On Mystique/Magneto Romance

It has been claimed that the upcoming ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ has been ‘crafted around’ Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto, and will dwell heavily on a romance between the two.

In a report on Lawrence’s future projects, The Hollywood Reporter cite an unnamed source who has read the script for the superhero sequel from 'X-Men: Days of Future Past' writer Simon Kinberg and ‘X2’ co-writers Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, and claims “Fox will take full advantage of Lawrence and Fassbender’s star power, placing Mystique and Magneto’s romance front and center.”

Given how far Lawrence and Fassbender have risen in the Hollywood ranks since joining the X-movieverse with 2011’s ‘X-Men: First Class,’ it makes perfect sense that Fox would want to make the most of their biggest names.

This will, of course, be one of the many respects in which the ongoing X-movies will part ways with the original three films. While Rebecca Romin-Stamos’ Mystique was always the right-hand woman of Ian McKellen’s Magneto, there never seemed to be any suggestion the relationship was anything but platonic, nor were the two ever romantically entangled in the comics.

It was only in ‘First Class’ that a romance between the two characters surfaced, with a love triangle thrown into the mix as Mystique’s affections are divided between Magneto and Beast (Nicholas Hoult).

Following on from the 60s-set ‘First Class’ and the 70s-set ‘Days of Future Past,’ ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ is expected to follow the storyline into the 1980s.

Brian Singer is directing once again, whilst Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, James McAvoy’s Xavier and Evan Peters’ Quicksilver are said to be returning - and rumour has it the film may also see Channing Tatum make his debut in the role of Gambit.

'X-Men: Apocalypse' is scheduled to hit UK cinemas on 19 May 2016.
