X-Men Apocalypse: Sophie Turner On Playing Jean Grey

Sophie Turner has spoken about her excitement at being cast as the new Jean Grey in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse.’

The ‘Game of Thrones’ actress tells Access Hollywood how overwhelmed she was on learning she’d landed the role as the younger incarnation of Famke Janssen’s character from the earlier X-movies - and how, from the sound of things, this excitement might have lost her another job.

"I was getting out of the car to walk in to the audition. And then my agent started ringing and she was like ‘Have you heard the news?’ ‘No, what news?’ Then she was like ‘Check your Twitter’. So then I checked it and… I was just getting like, ‘Congratulations Jean Grey.’

"Then I just started crying and I messed up the whole audition because I was just like, ‘I can’t speak!’"

Interesting to see that Twitter is sometimes where celebrities first learn about these things too…

Hailing her predecessor Janssen as “amazing,” Turner says, “I’m really trying to emulate her, because she did such a great job and I just hope I do justice to this incredible character.”

Still, she admitted to having “no idea” when she would be starting work on the Bryan Singer-directed film.

'X-Men: Apocalypse' continues to follow the new alternate prequel timeline of 'X-Men: First Class' and 'X-Men: Days of Future Past,' picking up with the younger mutants - James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence et al - in the 1980s.

There have been murmurs that this might be the last go around for Lawrence and Fassbender at least, both of whom have become major stars since ‘X-Men: First Class’ - so, given that Turner is taking on such a vital character in the X-Men universe, she could feasibly be in it for the long haul: likewise her co-stars Tye Sheridan (the new Cyclops) and Alexandra Shipp (the new Storm).

Still, let’s hope Turner isn’t being too literal when she speaks of ‘emulating’ Famke Janssen. Part of what has made the new X-Men prequel movies work has been that the new actors have made the parts their own rather than mimic those who came before, and Turner should certainly look to do likewise.

And who knows- if she does indeed do the role justice and sticks it out long enough, maybe we’ll finally get the Dark Phoenix movie the fans have long been hoping for, to finally obliterate all memory of ‘X-Men 3: the Last Stand’…
