X-Men: Apocalypse To Be Set In 80s

'X-Men: Days of Future Past' producer and writer Simon Kinberg has dropped some details about the film's follow-up, 'X-Men: Apocalypse'.

In an interview with Total Film, Kinberg revealed when the film would be set, who would be its stars and whether there’s a chance of any of the older cast returning once again.

Concerning the period in which ‘Apocalypse’ would be set, Kinberg said that the filmmakers plan to “push further into our past, but their future” as they did with ‘First Class’ set in the 60s and ‘Days of Future Past’ in the 70s.

At first acting defensive, Kinberg eventually opened up the question, saying with a smile: “I grew up in the 80s, and there’s no music I like than the 80s and so yes I think there’s a good chance that it’ll in the 80s.”

Last month Bryan Singer confirmed that the original prequel stars would return, fuelling reports that the older cast of Singer’s original ‘X-Men’ movies (apart from Wolverine) would not return.

"X-Men: Apocalypse will primarily follow the First Class cast - Fassbender, McAvoy, Jen Lawrence, Nic Hoult - those will be your protagonists," said Kinberg on the matter. "There may be some characters from the original cast, they could be a part of it and there’s a chance to tell origin stories for other members of the X-Men universe that we haven’t seen yet."

One of those original cast characters will absolutely be Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, but could more appear? If so, how will that play into the plot? Unless there’s a time-warping aspect involved similar to ‘Days of Future Past’.

As for the “chance to tell origin stories” this could well mean casting new actors in the roles of Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm - as the characters would have been in their teens during the 80s.

'X-Men: Days of Future Past' is out now. 'X-Men: Apocalypse' is set for 19 May 2016.
