X-Men: Apocalypse’s Jean Grey And Jubilee Revealed

Fresh from giving us our first look at Kodi Smit-McPhee in full make-up as Nightcrawler, ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ director Bryan Singer has shared our first semi-official look at two more of the new teenage X-Men.

Following on from the 1974-set ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ ‘Apocalypse’ moves the action to the early 1980s, re-introducing several key X-Men characters in much younger incarnations.

Singer’s Instagram photo - marked “ Fun second day with @sophie_789 @lanacondor#JeanGrey #Jubilee #XMEN #XMenApocalypse - shows ‘Game of Thrones’ actress Sophie Turner taking over from Famke Janssen as the telekinetic Jean Grey, alongside Lana Condor as Jubilee, whose abilities include creating explosive energy blasts from her hands.

While it would seem this is being treated as Jubilee’s first appearance in the X-Movies, the character did feature in a very minor capacity in the first three films as one of the students, portrayed by actresses Katrina Florece and Kea Wong. (If that gives you a continuity headache, just remember - these prequels are an entirely different timeline.)

While this image shows the two characters very much in everyday girl mode, Jubilee’s look in particular is immediately evocative of her appearance in the comics and the much-loved 1990s cartoon series, thanks to her signature yellow jacket and oversized gold hoop earrings.

We may very well be looking at the future of the X-movies here. While ‘Apocalypse’ will see the return of James McAvoy’s Professor X, Michael Fassbender’s Magneto, Nicholas Hoult’s Beast and Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, it is expected this will be the last film in the series for most if not all of these actors.

Meanwhile, none of the cast of the parallel modern day timeline of the first three ‘X-Men’ movies are expected to make an appearance this time around - all of which seems to point toward this being a shift in gear for the series in many respects.

It is also rumoured (courtesy of serial scoopster Umberto Gonzalez) that ‘Apocalypse’ will be not only Bryan Singer’s final X-movie as director (his fourth, after the first two and ‘DOFP’), but that it will also mark the end of the series as we know it - along with the third ‘Wolverine’ solo movie, which Hugh Jackman has confirmed will be his last time in the role.

Regardless of whether this proves true or not, ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ would definitely seem to represent a new beginning of sorts. Alongside Turner’s Jean Grey, Condor’s Jubilee and Smit-McPhee’s Nightcrawler, we’ll also see Alexandra Shipp take over from Halle Berry as Storm, whilst Tye Sheridan inherits the mantle of Cyclops from James Marsden.

Other newcomers include Olivia Munn as Psylocke, Ben Hardy as Angel, Oscar Isaac as titular villain Apocalypse - and there are rumours that Channing Tatum may also appear as Gambit, ahead of his 2016 solo movie.

Currently in production, ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ is due in cinemas on 27 May 2016 - making it a busy year for 20th Century Fox’s Marvel franchise, as it will be preceded by ‘Deadpool’ on 12 February, with ‘Gambit’ to follow on 16 October. Meanwhile, ‘Wolverine 3′ lands the following March.
