Warning: This article contains spoilers for The 100's season 6 finale.

Following The 100's season 6 finale in the US, showrunner Jason Rothenberg has spoken about what *that* ending could mean for season 7.

Are we looking at some actual magic being introduced to the series? For the forthcoming final run of episodes, it looks like the writers are really turning the screw.

In conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Rothenberg was asked about the finale's cliffhanger, which saw the mysterious green anomaly appear before Octavia was stabbed by an adult version of baby Hope (Diyoza's child) and disintegrated in Bellamy's arms.

"It's definitely grounded in science and we will explain all or as much as possible as we go into season 7," the showrunner promised. "I can't really talk about what it is.

"We know time is behaving badly around it because Hope is now in her early 20s and was a foetus three days prior when Diyoza went into the anomaly in episode eight.

"For some reason, that's a thing which has an explanation. The thing itself does as well. Any sufficiently advanced technology appears to be magic, as Arthur C Clarke says. That's what we're going to delve into in season 7."

But what about Octavia? Have we really seen the last of actress Marie Avgeropoulos?

"I don't want to tease anything about her fate other than we will explain what happens to her," Rothenberg said. "Whether she's alive or dead, Marie's amazing and you can safely say we have not seen the last of her.

"But whether or not she's dead and we tell her story in flashback or whether or not we see her again in the present, that's something we have to wait and see."

So, it looks like things will be resolved in the final season – but then again, this is The 100, so all bets are off.

The 100 airs on The CW in the US and E4 in the UK.
