13 Reasons Why has added a new key character connected to Dylan Minnette's Clay Jensen.

Forrest Gump actor Gary Sinise is set to star as Dr Robert Ellman in the show's fourth and final season.

His character has been described by Netflix as a compassionate but no-nonsense therapist who works to help Clay battle anxiety, depression and grief and begin the process of healing.

Series creator Brian Yorkey said: "From the first moments we conceived of the role, I thought of Gary Sinise, but hardly dared to dream it might happen.

"A consummate actor and first-rate human, Gary brings the exact combination of toughness, smarts, and heart the character needs. We're all thrilled and honoured to have him join us for this pivotal role in our final season."

Season three picked up on the events from the previous season and introduced Ani Achola (Grace Saif) as the new narrator of the series.

Some viewers were not a fan of Ani, claiming that she's not related to what happened in the first two seasons, but a number of fans took it too far in their response to Saif, who quit Instagram after verbally attacked by online trolls.

Anne Winters (who plays Chloe Rice) recently insisted that Ani was very important to the show, and explained: "You need someone that has the other side of Bryce and we wouldn't have really gotten to see that unless there was some sort of new character that was living with him."

The controversial teen series has already continued longer than Jay Asher's book of the same name that gave the starting point of the show's first season.

The show will conclude with season four, focusing on the main characters' high school graduation.

13 Reasons Why season 1, 2 and 3 are available now on Netflix.
