2024 Emmy Predictions:
Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series

Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn -- Ripley
Dakota Fanning and Johnny Flynn -- Ripley

Weekly Commentary (Updated: May 2, 2024): Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” has made an unexpected and meteoric rise, garnering 22 million views and ranking high on the top 10 streaming charts. This British thriller has catapulted from relative obscurity to significant cultural prominence in record time. Actors Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning, now seen as viable contenders in their respective award categories, in addition to writing, this could be a late-breaking spoiler if the buzz doesn’t dissipate. One notable question is, will the streamer be able to pull in “Ripley” for the ride as well?

Emmy and Oscar winner Nicole Kidman recently received the AFI Life Achievement Award, shining a light on her project, “Expats.” Directed by Lulu Wang, the series saw a boost in visibility partly due to the ceremony, which was attended by Kidman, Wang, and co-stars Ji-young and Sarayu Blue. The exposure improved its standing this week.

Showtime’s “Fellow Travelers” has also seen a surge in award predictions, bolstered by Jonathan Bailey’s recent casting in “Jurassic Park.” The series now ranks highly in the predictions for supporting actor in a limited series, where Bailey is considered a top contender along with Robert Downey Jr. from “The Sympathizer” and Lewis Pullman from “Lessons in Chemistry.”

The competition is still fierce, and there could be some surprises lurking in the wings of the season.

About the Primetime Emmy Awards

The Primetime Emmy Awards, commonly known as the Emmys, are awarded by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS). Established in 1949, these celebrate outstanding achievements in American primetime television. The Emmys are categorized into three divisions: the Primetime Emmy Awards for performance and production excellence, the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards recognizing achievements in artistry and craftsmanship, and the Primetime Engineering Emmy Awards, which honor significant engineering and technological advancements. The eligibility period typically extends from June 1 to May 31 each year. The Television Academy, which hosts the Emmys, consists of over 20,000 members across 30 professional peer groups, including performers, directors, producers, art directors, artisans and executives.
