Coronation Street legend Jean Alexander's last words revealed

The final words uttered by legendary Coronation Street actress Jean Alexander have been revealed by her brother Ken.

Speaking on ITV tribute show Hilda Ogden’s Last Ta-Ra, which goes out at 8pm tonight, Ken recalls: “Jean’s death came on suddenly. It was very hard to cope with it all.

“I still can’t get my head around it. The comforting thing is she was happy with what she had done.”

Ken revealed that his sister told him shortly before her death: “I’ve achieved what I wanted to do… not bad for a poor girl from Liverpool, is it?”

Pretty good going, we’d say.

Ken also spoke fondly of his sister’s first interest in acting, explaining that fame was never on the agenda.

“When she was a girl at school she got very interested in drama, especially words,” he explained. “She and a friend of hers, the read the whole of Shakespeare’s plays when they were about 15, taking alternate speeches.

“She wasn’t aiming to be famous, that was the last thing, she just wanted to work at it and to act and have the opportunity to do it.”

Jean played the acid-tongued Corrie legend between 1964 and 1987, before going on to play shopkeeper Auntie Wainwright in Last of the Summer Wine for 22 years.

She died in October aged 90.
