9-1-1 spoilers follow.

9-1-1 has aired a heartbreaking new moment in Maddie Buckley's battle with postpartum depression.

The new mum has been struggling after giving birth to Jee-Yun. The episode 'Boston' (March 28) brought viewers back to the depths of Maddie's (Jennifer Love Hewitt) struggle and aired an unseen clip of a suicide attempt.

The character had been seen to lay back and submerge herself under the bathwater before, but in this clip, Maddie attempted to drown herself in the ocean.

The heartbreaking moment offered a new light to her struggles that she continues to preserve through.

Maddie checked herself into hospital as a patient to face her depression and complex thyroid problems post-pregnancy.

The storyline is tough to watch, but Hewitt is glad that the medical series is touching on this important issue that occurs in some women after childbirth.

In an interview with TVLine, she explained: "There are these very simple blood tests they do for women after [giving birth], and then they just send you out. They're like, 'Well, it looks fine. You must just be feeling weird.'

"I appreciated that in Maddie's storyline, we really get into how part of what happened to her was just a missed hormone panel that no one paid attention to because she fell into this rare category of people who needed this certain kind of thing for her thyroid."

"I'm sure there will be women out there watching who will think, 'I've been feeling weird, maybe I need to go ask for that and look more into that.' Or reach out to people and say, 'I'm not feeling right,' and they have to pay attention."

Ultimately it was a relief to Maddie to be diagnosed with postpartum thyroiditis as she knew what she was dealing with after the uncertainty.

Alongside the new unseen moment, viewers also saw Maddie drop her baby at the firehouse and record an emotional message for Chimney (Kenneth Choi).

Both 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star air on FOX in the US and Sky Witness in the UK.
