9 Hollyoaks stars who played more than one role in the soap

From Digital Spy

Hollyoaks gave us a good excuse to brush up on our soap trivia this week, as Greg Wood made a surprise appearance in a Hollyoaks Favourites episode from 2000.

Greg is best known for playing Trevor Royle in the Channel 4 soap between 2013 and 2016, but has returned to screens this week in a previous (and often-forgotten) part – Mark Gibbs's friend Kenneth Boyd.

This moment got us thinking about other Hollyoaks stars who've appeared in the show as different characters over the years. There are too many to list them all, but here are nine of the best examples.

1. David Tag

Hollyoaks hunk David Tag joined the show's best-known family in 2018, when he was cast as Sylver McQueen. However, his first visit to the soap's set had actually come two years earlier.

In May 2016, David played PSCO Rocco for a single episode. This came at the height of the Gloved Hand Killer storyline, as Mercedes McQueen was given a police guard at home for her own protection while dangerous Lindsey Roscoe was on the loose.

Lindsey's sister Kim noted that PSCO Rocco was spending more time "eyeing up Mercedes" than offering police help – a funny coincidence, given that David's subsequent character Sylver ended up marrying Mercy.

2. Lysette Anthony

Lysette has been playing Marnie Nightingale on Hollyoaks since 2016, but her longevity in this role means that it's often easy to forget her previous stint on the show.

In 2008 and 2009, Lysette portrayed Yvonne, the mother of Louise Summers. Yvonne attended Louise's wedding to Warren Fox and later became embroiled in the mystery surrounding her daughter's disappearance.

When Lysette's casting as Marnie was announced in 2016, Hollyoaks boss Bryan Kirkwood acknowledged the fact that she'd been seen in the show before.

Kirkwood said: "We are incredibly lucky to have signed the talent and glamour of the wonderful Lysette Anthony. I've always been a huge fan, and a few years after her previous Hollyoaks cameo as Louise Summers' mum Yvonne, Lysette is now starring as brand new character Marnie Nightingale."

3. Jared Garfield

Lysette isn't the only member of the Nightingale family who had appeared in the soap before the clan were created in 2015. Jared Garfield, who played Nathan Nightingale, had also previously featured in an entirely different role.

In 2014, Jared appeared in a single episode as Dr Duffy, who gave Nana McQueen a check-up after she suffered a health scare.

Speaking to Digital Spy when he was cast as Nathan a year later, Jared laughed: "I graduated from drama school a couple of years ago and most of the stuff I did after leaving was theatre. Actually my only other TV job was Hollyoaks! I did an episode about a year ago playing a doctor – I was Doctor Duffy! I'm sure some Hollyoaks fans will clock that!"

4. Sophie Austin

Sophie earned her place in the Hollyoaks history books with her role as Lindsey Roscoe, who was exposed as the Gloved Hand Killer in the show's 20th anniversary episodes in 2015. However, her first appearance in the show was actually as a completely different character.

In 2012, Sophie appeared for a single episode in the role of Sapphire, a stripper at a club that was visited by Amy Barnes's boyfriend Ally Gorman.

Sophie was cast in the regular role of Lindsey the following year and stuck around until 2016.

5. Greg Wood

Greg, who was the inspiration for this feature, had a huge gap of 13 years in between his appearances as different characters in Hollyoaks.

In 2000, Greg – then credited as Greg Milburn – played Kenneth Boyd, a crony of show villain Mark Gibbs. In late-night episode Breaking Boundaries, Kenneth helped Mark to chase and attack Luke Morgan. Kenneth was horrified when Mark raped Luke – the first time the issue of male rape had been explored in a British soap.

Hollyoaks fans have seen some of this storyline's aftermath on screen in Hollyoaks Favourites this week, as the show is repeating Mark's trial episodes.

In 2013, Greg landed the regular role of Trevor Royle, who stuck around for three years.

6. Charlie Behan

Young actor Charlie Behan has grown up on screen in Hollyoaks, after taking on the role of Charlie Dean in 2011. He's currently taking centre stage in his first major storyline, which sees Nancy's impressionable nephew get embroiled in Jordan Price's County Lines drug dealing operations.

Prior to playing his current role, Charlie had a first try at soap acting in 2010 when he appeared as a totally different Hollyoaks character.

Charlie played Tre Davenport, part of Phil Sharpe's secret family. This storyline proved short-lived and Tre only appeared in two episodes, but Charlie clearly impressed soap bosses enough to be invited back.

7. Rob Norbury

Rob played Riley Costello from 2010 until 2012, when his character was killed off in a shock storyline twist. But Rob couldn't complain that Hollyoaks hadn't served him well over the years, as this was actually the third time that he'd appeared in the show.

In 2005, Rob portrayed the role of Nathan Haywood, a teenage friend of Justin Burton and Ali Taylor.

In 2006, Rob also popped up in spinoff show Hollyoaks: In The City, playing Debbie Clarke's ex-boyfriend Lennox.

8. Barry Sloane

Although best known these days for his roles on big-budget US shows like Revenge, Barry is still fondly remembered by Hollyoaks fans for his time as villainous Niall Rafferty. He played the part in 2007 and 2008.

Just a few months before being cast as Niall, Barry also featured on Hollyoaks for a couple of episodes at Becca Dean's trial, playing a barrister.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo after joining as Niall, Barry opened up over his Hollyoaks past for anyone who'd forgotten: "I do tend to be cast as the bad boy. But then I've got a skinhead so it usually goes that way. Last year I was the barrister at Becca's trial on Hollyoaks which was a bit different, but it's nearly always the hard lads I get."

9. Cameron Moore

Cameron Moore played bad boy Cameron Campbell on Hollyoaks between 2014 and 2017. However, he'd actually appeared in the show years earlier – as a photograph.

When serial killer Silas Blissett was trying to lure India Longford into a fatal trap in 2010, he used photographs of a much younger man on an online profile to trick her. The guy in the picture was played by Cameron Moore.

Amusingly, the name that Silas used on his fake profile was Cameron.

When Cameron Moore appeared as Cameron Campbell four years later, there was no acknowledgement of his previous on-screen "Cameron" picture cameo. Even though both characters had the same name, it's presumed that they were different people.
