Alan Carr has started filming his new comedy based on his life growing up, telling fans he feels "emotional, nervous, excited".

The Chatty Man star’s sitcom – entitled Changing Ends - is about his life as the son of a fourth division football manager in Northampton in the 1980s.

He will play himself as an adult and last year launched a huge search to find a boy to play him as a child, eventually casting Belfast’s Oliver Savell.

Rourke Mooney and Gabby Best will star as neighbours and guest stars include David Mumeni as Mr Chapman and Michael Socha as Adam.

ITV has said the comedy series is “more than just a trip down memory lane” and will be “a love letter to a time and a town where things weren’t always so inclusive”.

It follows the star’s journey through puberty, adolescence and self-discovery, all against the backdrop of Thatcher’s Britain.

“It’s about school and family, Kevin Keegan and George Michael, and figuring out who you are when your family are Match of the Day and you’re a bit Miss Marple,” a synopsis said.

Carr, 46, posted a picture on Instagram showing him in his trailer as the shoot got under way.

He told fans: "And so it begins - first day of filming on my sitcom Changing Ends based on my life growing up in Northampton.

"Emotional, nervous, excited, freezing (but that’s probably the weather) wish me luck."
