Alison Hammond has defended the Duke and Duchess of Sussex ahead of the release of their controversial documentary, saying the couple are "damned if they do, damned if they don't".

Netflix released a teaser trailer this week for its upcoming "global event" — entitled Harry & Meghan — in which the couple have promised to tell their story in full.

Hammond's guests Gyles Brandreth and Guardian columnist Sonia Sodha expressed mixed views about the Sussexes, with Brandreth saying their decision to make a documentary was at odds with comments about wanting privacy.

Sodha added that the idea of "having it all out there" with regards to the couple's experience of the Royal Family is "not very British".

Hammond responded: "Well if the Kim Kardashians do it, why can't they? I feel like they're damned if they do, damned if they don't."

Brandreth replied that he wondered whether Harry and Meghan were becoming "the royal Kardashians".

The official synopsis for Harry & Meghan reveals that the documentary will take the form of a six-part limited series and will "explores the clandestine days of their early courtship and the challenges that led to them feeling forced to step back from their full-time roles in the institution".

The synopsis concludes that "the series does more than illuminate one couple’s love story, it paints a picture of our world and how we treat each other".
