Sherlock star Amanda Abbington fought tears as she talked about her stuntman fiance being left paralysed after a horrifying accident.

Escapologist Jonathan Goodwin — who is known for appearing on Britain's Got Talent three years ago — nearly died after falling 30 feet between two burning cars and missing a safety airbag below when a stunt rehearsal went wrong.

He spent four months in hospital after the accident and now uses a wheelchair.

Appearing on ITV's Lorraine, the pair revealed that Goodwin gave Abbington the option of leaving him.

“I did say, you have a get out of jail free card - if you want to walk away, then I completely understand and she told me not to be so stupid and that was that," he said.

The emotional actor said the pair are "closer and tighter than ever" after what happened.

"Every day is a joy," she said. "Life’s too short - that’s what I’ve realised through all of this. Just be in the moment.”

“He’s a total inspiration to me," added the actor, who is best known for playing Mary Watson in Sherlock.

Goodwin said he was "not down" about what happened.

"I’m doing as well as I can be," he said.

"It was pretty gnarly. It sounds very dramatic sitting here but I nearly died… I saved my life because I fell upside down, head first to the ground but I didn’t hit my head.”

The 42-year-old was injured last year while he was working on the stunt for America's Got Talent: Extreme.

Speaking on Jay Rayner's Out To Lunch podcast recently, Abbington said he suffered burns, broke his spine, lost a kidney, shattered his legs and severed his spinal cord in the accident.

"Unless there's a kind of stem cell surgery, or that thing that Elon Musk is designing with the little chip, he'll be like that forever," she said.
