Amanda Holden and Alan Carr are set to tackle a huge DIY project as they renovate an Italian holiday home for a new BBC One series.

Amanda and Alan: The Italian Job sees Britain's Got Talent judge Holden and chat show presenter Carr team up to join the ranks of one Euro property developers creating their dream holiday home from a bargain buy.

The pair bought adjoining flats in rural Sicily for a total of two euros, which they will knock together and transform into a large holiday home during the show.

Many Italian municipalities try to breathe new life into rundown villages and towns by offering empty properties for a symbolic one Euro price and their derelict building will be sold on at the end of the summer with profits going to charity.

Both stars have taken on renovations before, and Carr is the presenter of TV contest Interior Design Masters, but this is the biggest project either of them has ever attempted.

While they'll be drafting in local tradespeople to show them the ropes, Holden and Carr will be carrying out the vast majority of work themselves, including plumbing, painting and plastering.

Carr said: "After presenting two series of Interior Design Masters I feel now it’s time for me to pop my hard hat on, slip on my steel toe capped boots and really get my hands dirty.

"Working in beautiful Sicily with one of my dearest friends is like I’ve won the jackpot. Expect a summer of drilling, demolition and hopefully la dolce vita!”

Holden added: “Alan and I came up with the idea for this show together and approached the BBC as we knew it was the perfect home.

"We are both very passionate about interior design and we'll be very hands-on, injecting some much-needed life into an area of Sicily that's in need of some Holden and Carr magic.

"Although we're on the same page most of the time, I'm more practical and organised than Alan. However, he's up for some shameless bargaining so that will help us keep on budget!"

The eight-episode series has already begun filming and is expected to air on BBC One later this year.
