Season two's opening episode witnessed Max waking up next to his wife Georgia three months after the crash, and the two then discussed who should go and tend to their crying baby daughter Luna.

The action then moved to work, where Max received some great updates regarding his health, but then a number of flashbacks occurred to reveal what really happened during that fateful day.

Although Helen and Lauren survived the roadside horror, it turns out Georgia succumbed to her wounds in hospital – meaning Max had actually been on his own comforting Luna the whole time.

Discussing this shock twist with TV Line, New Amsterdam showrunner David Schulner revealed that he "chickened out" of killing Georgia in the season one finale although he'd purposefully set up her demise way back in the pilot episode.

He then admitted that the network nudged him into making the decision by saying "you're chickening out. You set this up in the pilot. You've been talking about it all year. You should follow your gut."

Schulner added: "It really was like a death. Having Lisa O'Hare [actress] play a corpse on that operating table, those things are really hard to ask actors to do, and we didn't do it lightly, and we didn't do it cavalierly. A lot of thought and anguish went into the process."
