Anita Dobson has joined the cast of 'Doctor Who.'

The 73-year-old actress - who is best known for having played classic 'EastEnders' character Angie Watts in the 1980s - will be starring in the upcoming series of the BBC sci-fi series alongside 'After Life' star Michelle Greenidge, 52, when it returns to screens later this year.

In a press statement, the BBC said: "Today we have announced that Anita Dobson and Michelle Greenidge will be starring in the next series of Doctor Who. Doctor Who returns in November 2023 with three special episodes to coincide with the 60th anniversary with David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor. The Fifteenth Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, will then take control of the TARDIS, with his first episode airing over the festive period in 2023."

The broadcaster did not reveal any other details or even names of the characters but have posted official portraits of the former 'Strictly Come Dancing' star and Michelle in their roles onto the show's official Instagram page.

Following her stint in 'EastEnders', Anita - who has been married to Queen legend Brian May since 2000 - went on to appear in shows such as 'Red Dwarf' and 'The Rebel', but is also a regular face in the world of theatre, having starred as Madame Morrible in West End smash 'Wicked' and in 2019 toured the UK as Miss Hannigan in 'Annie.'

Meanwhile, Michelle - as well as starring alongside Ricky Gervais in his hit Netflix comedy - also appears with 'Motherland' actress Diane Morgan in her sitcom 'Mandy ' as Lola, the best friend of the title character.

As well as former star of the show David Tennant, revival series creator Russell T Davies has also returned to his role as showrunner after a break of 14 years and recently admitted that he is "loving" being back on the production side of the show.

He said: "I am loving it, loving it so much. We’ve three specials and then a brand-new doctor, who is amazing."
