Butterfly has been written by Tony Marchant (Public Enemies, Great Expectations) and will be produced by RED Production Company. Filming is due to begin in early 2018.

"Butterfly is a beautiful story about a young boy on the cusp of puberty who doesn't feel comfortable in his own body," said ITV's Head of Drama Polly Hill.

"It's a heartwarming and emotional script from Tony Marchant that focuses upon gender identity and one boy's search to be recognised for who he really is. We're looking forward to working with Nicola Shindler and her team at RED Production Company."
