An Antiques Roadshow guest was shocked to learn the value of Sir Lewis Hamilton's old helmet and overalls which he won in a competition.

The racing fan revealed his father met the Formula One star in 2008 after winning a competition to be driven around the Top Gear race track by Hamilton and was gifted the signed memorabilia - and vowed not to sell it for the foreseeable future.

The guest told the BBC show: "When it all happened in 2008 that was the first season I started watching [Formula One] and I have never stopped.

"I asked my dad to enter a competition because I wasn't old enough to enter at the time and it just so happened that he won.

"You were flown by helicopter to where they filmed Top Gear and got to meet Lewis Hamilton."

He added that the racing star was "very chatty, very smiley".

The signed Hamilton memorabilia included a helmet, overalls, a lanyard and photograph of his father with Hamilton.

Antiques expert Hilary Kay, 66, told him: "Even though this isn't a race overall it is the real thing, he did wear it while he was driving.

"Obviously the value isn't going to be as high as if it was a race overall.

"But I still think the two together and the VIP pass, all signed, will be around £10,000."

The guest replied: "Wow. Yeah, that's a lot more than I was expecting... But I'll definitely keep a hold of this for the foreseeable future and hopefully add to it."

Kay told him: "The great thing is, your dad has passed his enthusiasm on to you. You are going to look after this collection and hopefully you are going to add to it."

Hamilton, 38, won his first Formula One race in 2007 and so 2008 was during the height of his career.
