Minor Away spoilers follow.

Away creator Andrew Hinderaker has explained how the conclusion for the space-set show was decided upon, and what fans might expect from a sophomore instalment if Netflix goes on to renew it.

Starring Josh Charles and Hilary Swank, the series centres on astronaut Emma Green, who embarks on a dangerous mission to Mars alongside an international crew – leaving her husband and daughter behind.

Each of its 10 episodes sees different characters come into focus, as it explores the reasons behind their involvement and their temperaments aboard the ship.

Its finale, as may have been expected, sees the gang land on Mars, which Hinderaker says was planned from the get go.

"The day one idea from the pitch of the show was that it would begin with Emma looking back at Earth from the moon and ends with her looking back at Earth from Mars," he recently told Collider. "That's just so much of [what] the show is about."

Later, Hinderaker explained that he and Goldberg were privy to the design journey of the probe InSight – which took off to Mars back in 2018 – while the initial scripts were being penned, and being in the room with the engineers when it landed successfully was "so exciting and so moving."

"They're watching their life's work either go up in flames or slam onto another planet," he recalled. "We all burst into cheers and then one of our writers turned to us and said, 'Imagine now that there had been people on it.' So it felt like that's what we wanted to build to.

"In terms of Season 2, I always felt like if there was a final card that I would love to have on the season, it would be 'Away will return for Season 2… on Mars,' Hinderaker added. "Part of what we're promising is what that crew experiences at the very end, we now get to live in a new world."

Away is available to stream on Netflix now.
