Sarah Drew was axed from Grey's Anatomy only a week ago, but she's already found herself a new TV show – and it could be a big one.

The actress will be playing Cagney in the upcoming reboot of iconic '80s police drama Cagney & Lacey, Deadline reports. Blindspot's Michelle Hurd has been cast as Lacey.

The new CBS series will follow the two police detectives as they battle to keep the streets of Los Angeles safe. Rosemary Rodriguez will direct the pilot written by Bridget Carpenter.

The original Cagney and Lacey were played by Tyne Daly and Sharon Gless (above), airing for seven seasons. Daly won four Best Actress Emmys and Gless won two, while the classic series picked up Best Drama a couple of times as well.

Drew has starred as Dr April Kepner on Grey's for nine seasons, but she's leaving at the end of its current 14th year after surprisingly being axed alongside Jessica Capshaw aka Dr Arizona Robbins.

It's fair to say that fans of the ABC medical drama haven't exactly taken the news well – neither has Jesse Williams (Dr Jackson Avery) – and it emerged this week there could be even more heartbreak in store.

Dr Meredith Grey actress Ellen Pompeo recently hit back at the outrage surrounding Capshaw and Drew's exits, while she and showrunner Krista Vernoff have also shut down any suggestion that the decision to axe the pair was related to the show's budget and Pompeo's salary.

Grey's Anatomy airs on ABC in the US and on Sky Living in the UK.
