David Tennant stars as iconic adventurer Phileas Fogg in the new BBC adaptation of Around the World in 80 Days.

Originally written by author Jules Verne (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) in 1872, the story follows Londoner Fogg and his French valet Passepartout as they embark on an ambitious trip across Earth for a large sum of money.

Ibrahim Koma is onboard as Passepartout, while Leonie Benesch (The Crown) plays Abigail Fix – the journalist who joins the intrepid duo on their journey – and we have a first teaser image below.

Around the World in 80 Days will consist of eight hour-long episodes and has Life on Mars co-creator Ashley Pharoah leading a team of writers.

Production kicked off in February this year, but the COVID-19 crisis is likely to have affected it somewhat.

Head of BBC programme acquisition Sue Deeks commented: "This is such an exciting project. There is an amazing team both in front and behind the camera and we cannot wait to see their ambitious interpretation of this classic novel for a new generation."

This series welcomes The Durrells director Steve Barron, as well as Supernatural's Charles Beeson, behind the camera.

Readers of a certain age may remember Steve Coogan and Jackie Chan's most recent adaptation of the novel, which was released on the big screen 16 years ago.

Around the World in 80 Days arrives next year on the BBC.
