Bertie Carvel has signed up for two more series of 'Dalgliesh'.

The 44-year-old actor stars as detective Adam Dalgliesh in the Channel 5 hit mystery drama series - which is based on the novels by PD James - and following a successful first outing in 2021, the show is reportedly set to return to screens for a further two seasons, in the hope that it will rival other dramas on ITV and the BBC.

A TV insider said: "'Dalgliesh' was a hit with audiences so it made total sense to build on that success. Channel 5 knows cop dramas are the in thing right now, and hope 'Dalgliesh' can be its version of 'Inspector Morse' or 'A Touch Of Frost'."

Bertie - who is best known to TV audiences for appearing as Simon Foster in 'Doctor Foster', and prior to that won an Olivier award for his portrayal of Miss Trunchbull in 'Matilda the Musical' - is said to be "delighted" to have committed to the role again.

The source told The Sun newspaper's TV Biz column: "Bertie knows he’s onto a good thing playing the character and was delighted to sign the deal!"

While no further details regarding air times or filming have been announced, the second series will be an adaptation of novels 'Death Of An Expert Witness', 'A Certain Justice' and 'The Murder Room'.

Channel 5 began to launch original drama series in 2019 with 'Cold Call' - which starred ex-'Corrie' actress Sally Lindsay as a woman who falls victim to a scam phone call - and more recently received acclaim for Sheridan Smith drama 'The Teacher' as well as 'The Drowning', which saw former 'Waterloo Road' actress Jill Halfpenny star as a businesswoman struggling to cope with the death of her son.
