The Blacklist season 9 to feature two-year time jump

The Blacklist spoilers follow.

The Blacklist has revealed that season 9 will open with a major time jump.

Following the previous instalment's explosive finale, which saw Megan Boone's profiler Elizabeth Keen suffer a fatal gunshot wound, the events depicted in the new episodes will kick off two years on.

In the wake of Liz's absence, the FBI task force has disbanded and the whereabouts of the show's new lead character, Raymond 'Red' Reddington, are unknown.

Diego Klattenhoff as Agent Ressler, Amir Arison as Aram Mojtabai, Hisham Tawfiq as Dembe, Laura Sohn as Agent Park and Harry Lennix as Harold Cooper and, of course, James Spader will all be returning to reprise their respective roles.

"Finding themselves each at a crossroads, a common purpose compels them to renew their original mission: to take down dangerous, vicious and eccentric Blacklisters," the official synopsis reads.

"In the process, they begin to uncover lethal adversaries, unimaginable conspiracies and surprising betrayals that will threaten alliances and spur vengeance for the past, led by the most devious criminal of them all – Raymond Reddington."

Boone's departure from the show earlier this year coincided with the exit of day-one showrunner Jon Bokenkamp.

At the time, he explained: "I love [The Blacklist] with all of my heart, and it’s been an incredible journey, but after eight years I feel it's time for me to step out of my comfort zone, try something new, and explore a few of the other characters and stories that have been crawling around in my head.

"I genuinely believe the series remains full of life, creatively strong, and that bright days lie ahead."

The Blacklist returns on October 21 on NBC in the US.
