Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus considered taking his life as he details gruelling cancer fight

Blink 182 bassist Mark Hoppus has admitted he thought about taking his life when he learned about his cancer diagnosis.

The 50-year-old musician, who revealed he was battling lymphoma in 2021, explained that his diagnosis had plunged him into depression and he struggled to cope.

Hoppus has since received the all-clear and explained that he was embracing his “second shot at life.”

However, it hasn’t been an easy journey. Speaking to People after overcoming cancer, the father-of-one opened up about how his wife pulled him through some of his darkest moments.

“I was in our living room crying and telling my wife, ‘I don’t know if I can do this,’” Hoppus told the publication after hearing his diagnosis.

He added: “She was like, ‘Well, what are you going to do, kill yourself?’ And that’s exactly what I was thinking. It was pretty dark.”

Despite struggling with dark thoughts, his wife’s words actually served as a wake-up call and helped the rocker focus on getting better.

“It was a total snap-out-of-it moment,” Hoppus said. “I was like, ‘What a s***ty thing to say.’ But also, what a kind thing to say, like, ‘Snap out of it, you f***ing baby. You have a beatable form of cancer. It’s going to suck to get there, but get there.’ I had to do the work.”

Hoppus learned he had cancer after noticing an unusual lump in his shoulder. After doctors ran tests, he learned he had developed stage 4 diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

Despite being treatable, Hoppus still had to endure several gruelling months of chemotherapy before learning that he was cancer free.

Hoppus is now focusing on returning to work. The bassist is in the process of writing a book and has even launched a record label.

As for his work with Blink 182, Hoppus appears optimistic as he revealed that he’s “open to whatever the next phase of Blink is.”
