A driver behind the wheel of a supercar has been caught speeding down the M5 at more than 140mph.

Police clocked a BMW i8 travelling at 142mph in Somerset before stopping it near Bristol on Thursday.

Avon and Somerset Police's Roads Policing Unit slammed the driving as "reckless and selfish" after sharing an image of the supercar on the motorway at 12.18pm, and another of it on the hard shoulder after officers had pulled it over.

They tweeted: "Supercar at track speeds on the #M5! #Fatal5 #Speed.

"Driver detected at a speed of 142mph today in #Somerset and was stopped by officers near to #Bristol.

"This level of driving is both reckless and selfish - it puts lives at risk.”

Avon and Somerset Police's Roads Policing Unit added one in 25 drivers who passed them in the space of an hour were caught speeding at above 85mph.

A Somerset and Avon Police spokesperson said: ‘A 33-year-old man from London has been reported for summons in connection with this incident.’

In December, a driver was caught speeding at 100mph on the wrong side of the road in Cumbria.

Onlookers said the driver sped past in a no-overtake zone and barely made it back on to the right side of the road in time.

The incident occurred on 31 December on the A590 between Dalton-in-Furness and Lindal-in-Furness.

Connor Chapman, 22, a food delivery driver, filmed the incident on his dashcam while driving his girlfriend home from work.

He said: "I wouldn't have said I was worried for my safety as he got past me very quickly however not long after the overtake there were cars coming the other way and he was entering a 40mph zone with a crossing not long after.

"It could have easily caused a crash."
