Boris and Carrie Johnson are booed as they arrive at St Paul's

The Prime Minister and his wife were booed by the crowd outside St Paul's as they arrived for the Queen's thanksgiving service.

Boris and Carrie Johnson were walking up the steps towards the cathedral door when boos were heard.

Mr Johnson, dressed in a suit, was hand-in-hand with Mrs Johnson, dressed in red. Neither reacted to the booing, instead carrying on into the cathedral to take their seats.

Other onlookers were also heard cheering the couple.

The boos came from crowds on the south side of the plaza in front of the cathedral. These were the spectators with the best view of the great and the good climbing the steps to the cathedral.

'They had a few parties'

Speculating on the cause of the booing, an Australian tourist, present in the crowd, said of Mr and Mrs Johnson: "They had a few parties during lockdown. That was pretty much the most of it.

"It might be the wrong place, but if that's what they do, that's up to them. I don't think that's what the majority feel, but everyone has their opinions, and there are a lot of opinions out there."

Meanwhile, a huge cheer went up as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived and they were greeted at the great west door by the Dean of St Paul's.

They spent a few minutes talking to the senior cleric before they entered the place of worship and proceeded to greet the long line of clergy who are taking part in today's service of thanksgiving.

Harry stopped to chat for a few moments with the Archbishop of York who later will give the sermon and is expected to praise the Queen's 70-year reign.

The Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge were also given a warm reception. Cheers and whoops rang out as they climbed the steps. The Duchess was dressed in pale yellow; the Duke briefly waved to the crowd as he walked.
