Andre Braugher has landed a new TV role following the end of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

The actor will be joining the political drama The Good Fight as new series regular Ri'Chard Lane, a showman lawyer and rainmaker.

Ri'Chard is forced on Liz (Audra McDonald) as a new name partner, and is described as "a wild mix of brilliance, geniality, religion and joyful hedonism. In short, he's a handful."

The creators/showrunners Robert and Michelle King said in a statement: "Our dream of an actor is always someone who can mix comedy and drama equally, and Andre is exactly that.

"His work on Men of a Certain Age, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Homicide has been amazing and funny.

"We're ecstatic that he finally has time in his schedule to come play."

The Good Fight was recently renewed for a sixth season, with Paramount saying it will air in late 2022 with Christine Baranski returning as Diane Lockhart.

Paramount+ President of Original Scripted Series Nicole Clemens said at the time of renewal: "The Good Fight's provocative, whip-smart, and no-holds-barred world remains as relevant as ever, continuing to entice new audiences as one of Paramount+'s top-performing original series and acquisition drivers."

Braugher played Captain Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine for all eight seasons.

He previously spoke about his casting on the popular sitcom, admitting he was unsure about being in a comedy having not done one before.

He said to Variety about being cast: "Everything’s new. I'd never done it before. Am I any good?

"I remember turning to my wife and asking her, 'Is this funny?' And she said, 'Yes, of course, you're not being deceived.' But I kept looking at it, saying to myself, is this good? I couldn't really judge."

The show's creator Dan Goor added: "Andre brings incredible gravitas and intelligence to Captain Holt, which serves to ground the character and also makes it that much funnier when we write silly, goofy, ridiculous things for him to say and do."

The Good Fight's fifth season is now available to watch in the US via Paramount+.
