Prince William served fanboy fashion at last night’s Top Gun Maverick London premiere, walking the red carpet wearing velvet slippers embroidered with F-18 jets.
The Crockett & Jones loafers, which he paired with an Alexander McQueen tuxedo, were a nod to the fighter jet flown by Tom Cruise’s character Maverick. They were also a homage to the Duke of Cambridge’s history as a trained pilot, where he spent three years leading search and rescue missions in Anglesey.
It appears the feelings were mutual, with Hollywood royalty Cruise stating the two have “a lot in common – we both love England, and we both love flying”.
Also in attendance was the Duchess of Cambridge, who sported a glamorous black and white Roland Mouret dress. The Duchess accessorised the off-shoulder gown with Robinson Pelham’s Tsar Star diamond drop earrings, an Alexander McQueen black clutch, and black pumps.
The prince is supposedly a massive Top Gun fan, and was even honoured with his own VIP preview of the highly anticipated sequel to the original 1986 film. What’s more Cruise is a big admirer of the Royal Family, having personally escorted the couple down the red carpet last night to introduce them to his co-stars Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm and Miles Teller.
The reboot of the cult classic, which was originally meant to be released in July 2019 but was repeatedly pushed back due to the coronavirus pandemic, has already got rave reviews. As a result, last night’s premiere saw a host of A list fans turn out in their best mile high fashion. Most notably TV presenter Carol Vorderman, who got her pilot’s licence back in 2014, ditched the black tie dress code and wore a green flight suit with “Matherick” escribed on the back.
The Cambridges’ rare red carpet date commemorated the film being chosen as the 76th Royal Film performance, which is a charity event that raises money to support the hundreds of thousands who work behind the scenes in the United Kingdom’s film and television industry.

The last time the two stepped out for such an occasion was nearly a year when they attended the premiere of the James Bond movie No Time to Die at Royal Albert Hall, where the Duchess made a statement in a gold-sequined Jenny Packham cape gown.
