Casualty star Jason Durr has spoken out about David Hide's brand new challenge after tonight's dramatic episode (August 31).

David took centre stage in Saturday night's shocking scenes, when his teenage son Ollie fell from a bridge into a fast flowing river.

Although David did eventually manage to pull Ollie from the water, a further tragedy awaited them back at the hospital.

When Ollie's condition started to deteriorate back at the ED, it quickly became apparent that he had suffered some very serious chest injuries during resuscitation.

After Ollie underwent life-saving surgery, he made the big decision to move out of his mum's house and live with David full time.

Given that David is already struggling to juggle his work responsibilities with spending time with Ollie, how will he cope with this huge readjustment?

Discussing David's future with Digital Spy, Jason – who plays the character – said: "This is David's dream, but he is only too aware that life is not quite as straightforward or easy as that. I think there are many other factors that need to be negotiated and overcome.

"Having – through no fault of his own – not spent much time with his son over the last couple of years, David and Ollie have a strange relationship.

They do love each other but they are both slightly damaged characters, and to heal those wounds and mend, they do need to spend time together.

"But it is finding out how and when to do that. All of those questions will be discussed and investigated. It's a great thing but it's a question of how they can achieve it. That is what we will be exploring now."

Teasing what fans can expect to see from David in the coming weeks, Jason added: "He has to try and juggle his hospital shifts with being a single parent, and not necessarily having the support of his ex-wife.

"It's going to be a challenge but it's one that David will try and rise to. It's definitely one to watch.

"I am hoping Ollie will be around for a bit longer. We are very lucky to have Harry [Collett] and he has a very bright career ahead of him. As long as he wants to come and do it, I am sure he will be there."

Casualty continues on Saturday, September 7 on BBC One.
