In a video shared on Casualty's Twitter account, Michael and Lauren are seen together while filming the festive episode.

Explaining how his wife came to be cast in the show, Michael said: "They want a new love interest for Iain and they racked their brains with who they could possibly cast to do that.

"So guess who they brought in? My wifey!" Lauren then joked: "I said if they pay enough I will kiss him."

Iain then explained how having his real-life wife as his love interest made filming easier during Covid restrictions over the summer:

"With us all still filming at two-metre distances, putting us two together means they don't have to put us into bubbles because we're already in a bubble and we can get close and do, sort of, more intimate scenes."

The couple then revealed that their characters are work colleagues with "benefits" and the episode is set on Christmas Day 2020.

We've previously learnt that the episode will see Iain and Chrissie face real danger as they are called out to an RTC at a ravine and discover that a van has toppled over onto an unstable ledge that could collapse at any moment.

Lauren is no stranger to the world of soaps, having played Danielle Jones, Joel Reynolds and Ronnie Mitchell's daughter in EastEnders between 2008 and 2009. She has also appeared in Sherlock, Holby City, Doctors, Vanity Fair and Mr Selfridge.

Casualty airs on Saturdays on BBC One.
