Clueless to get reboot by Girls Trip director Tracy Oliver

A remake of classic 1990s teen romcom Clueless is reportedly in the works.

Paramount Studios has reportedly hired Marquita Robinson, a writer and story editor on the Netflix series GLOW, to write the script. Girls Trip's Tracy Oliver has been lined up to produce, according to Deadline.

The original Clueless was released in 1995. Directed and written by Amy Heckerling as a modern take on Jane Austen's novel Emma, the film was a box office smash and has since become a cult classic.

It starred Alicia Silverstone as Cher, a sweet but privileged, popular teenager who takes new girl Tai (Brittany Murphy) under her wing and gives her a makeover.

Among the many memorable moments in the film is the quote "as if!" – short for "as if that were true" – that came from Heckerling's study of teenage slang at the time. The film earned $56m in the US on a budget of $12m budget, and led to a three-season television spin-off.

Paul Rudd, Breckin Meyer, Jeremy Sisto, Stacey Dash and Dan Hedaya also starred the film.

Clueless has continued to resonate with teenage fans, even today, and some are questioning why a remake of the beloved film is necessary. It is unclear if any of the former cast members will reprise their roles.

News of the remake arrives as Clueless: The Musical is about to make its Off-Broadway debut, on 20 november at New York's The Alice Griffin Jewel Box Theatre.
